PAT Analysis of image:

First of all, I think this could be part of an effective presentation. Here's what works and what would make the image more effective:
  • The graph does a good job of providing information and making the case that Americans are overproteined.
  • What would make this image more useful is changing the figure / ground and hierarchical design.
  • I would change the order of the boxes or even separate them into “Big Mac”, “Chicken” and “Hot dog” categories.
  • I like the use of graphics although I’m not sure I would put a baby chicken in this one – people don’t like to think about the fact that they are eating a cute little chick once it gets older!
  • I’m not wild about the alignment and the proximity. It could be organized in a way that “Overproteined” is more prominent because that is the main argument the image is trying to convince us of.

The main issue for me with the image was that it left me wanting a lot more information:
  • I would like to see another graph or image comparing the American diet to Canada, Japan, England or Germany.
  • I’d also like to see a graph showing obesity rates due to our high protein and likely high fat diets versus other countries.
  • Additionally, I think that this could be part of a larger nutritional presentation that includes all of the major food groups. If Americans are “overproteined” are we deficient in vitamins and minerals provided from fruits and vegetables? Do we eat too many carbohydrates or sugars?
